Zakharova said the EU is pressuring Serbia to recognize Kosovo’s independence

The European Union is pressuring Serbia to recognize the statehood of the self-proclaimed republic of Kosovo. This was stated by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.

According to Maria Zakharova, the meeting held in early May within the framework of the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue under the auspices of the EU ended in the absence of agreements on the most important issue of the formation of the Community of Kosovo Serb Municipalities.

“Basically, this is a failure. EU members have once again allowed Pristina to continue to sabotage their obligation to create the SSMK,” follows Zakharova’s statement, posted on the Russian ministry’s website. Foreign Affairs.

Zakharova noted that the actions of the Kosovo Albanian “authorities” remained “without an appropriate reaction” from the EU, which only contributes to the escalation of the situation in the north of the region – the number of intimidations and attacks against Serbs are increasing, as well as cases of their detention by the Kosovo “police”.

The diplomat drew attention to the EU’s encouragement of Pristina’s actions. So, in March, it was decided to offer visa-free travel to residents of the region. While the sovereignty of Kosovo is not recognized by five EU countries.

“The EU’s efforts boil down to putting pressure on Belgrade to push it step by step towards recognizing Kosovo’s ‘statehood’, demonstrating its reluctance to break the resistance of intransigent Kosovo Albanian figures,” said noted the diplomat.

Zakharova added that the failure to play the role of an “honest broker” shows up in all negotiations the EU joins. The diplomat recalled a similar situation with the “civilian” mission in Armenia, which the EU launched in February. As a result, the organization was still able to contribute to the normalization of relations in this region.

In conclusion, Maria Zakharov noted that in the EU they verbally defend the territorial integrity of states, but “in fact they promote the separation of part of the territory from Serbia.”

Earlier this year, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić called the European Parliament’s demands on Kosovo brazen. According to him, the recognition of Kosovo’s independence will be a noose around Serbia’s neck. He added that Western countries only understand the language of force.
