Clear majority for Congress in Karnataka, AAP candidate wins from Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat

Apna Dal wins in UP assembly by-election

New Delhi. The Congress party has registered a landslide victory in the Karnataka Assembly elections. The Congress has got a clear majority in the election results that came on Saturday. According to the Election Commission, Congress has won 136, BJP 65, Janata Dal (Secular) 19 and others four. Congress got more than 43 percent votes in these elections. While BJP got 36 and JDS 13.31 percent votes.

Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) candidate Sushil Kumar Rinku has won the Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat in Punjab. On the other hand, Apna Dal (Sonelal) candidates won from Chhanbe in Mirzapur and Swar seats in Rampur district in Uttar Pradesh assembly by-elections. Rinki Kol has filed for Chanbe seat and Shafiq Ahmed for Swar seat. Ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) candidate Dipali Das won the by-election to Odisha’s Jharsuguda assembly seat. Sinshar Kupar Rai Thabah of the United Democratic Party has won one assembly seat in Meghalaya.

Congress workers distributed sweets and waved party flags to celebrate the victory in the Karnataka assembly elections. Workers gathered at Congress headquarters in Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, Jharkhand and Bihar, including the party headquarters. People were seen dancing on the streets to the beat of drums and waving flags.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated the Congress party on its victory in the Karnataka Assembly elections. He also thanked the BJP workers for working hard in the BJP’s campaign.

Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar said that the Bharatiya Janata Party will play the role of a constructive opposition in Karnataka.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel said the saffron party talks of a “Congress-mukt-India”, but the party itself is not in power in South India, on Congress’ clear victory in the Karnataka assembly elections.

Continuing his winning streak since 1989, Karnataka Congress chief and Vokkaliga strongman DK Shivakumar on Saturday emerged victorious in the assembly polls for the eighth consecutive term. He retained his Kanakapura seat with a huge margin of 1,21,595 votes.

Former Chief Minister of Karnataka Jagadish Shettar was denied ticket by BJP and went to Congress. He contested on a Congress ticket and lost the Hubli-Dharwad (Central) seat by a margin of 34,289 votes.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge’s son Priyank Kharge won from Chittapur constituency in Karnataka by a margin of 13,638 votes. This was his third consecutive victory from this seat.

Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai won from the Shiggaon constituency with a margin of over 35,000 votes and a vote share of 54.95 per cent.

Ministers who won their respective seats include Araga Gyanendra from Tirthahalli, CC Patil from Gadag, Prabhu Chauhan from Ourad, ST Somashekar from Yesvantpur, Bayarathi Basavaraj from KR Puram, Gopalaiah from Mahalakshmi Layout, Shashikala Jolle from Nippani, Karkala Sunil Kumar, Muniratna from Rajarajeshwari Nagar and Shivram Hebbar from Yellapur.

Ministers who lost include BS Sriramulu from Bellary, Madhuswami from Chikkanayakanahalli, Govinda Kajol from Mudhol, Health and Welfare Minister K Sudhakar from Chikballapur, MTB Nagaraj from Hoskote, BC Patil from Hirekerur, Murugeshani from Beelagi, KC Narayangowda from KR, BC Nagesh from Tipur and Shankar Patil from Nawalgund.

Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party candidate on Saturday won the bypoll from the Jalandhar Lok Sabha constituency, which was considered a Congress bastion for the last 24 years. According to the Election Commission, AAP candidate Sushil Kumar Rinku, a former Congress MLA, defeated his nearest rival, Karamjit Kaur of the Congress, by a margin of over 58,000 votes.

AAP’s national convenor and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday congratulated the Congress for its victory in the Karnataka Assembly elections. He said that the BJP should now realize that its strategy no longer works.
