Kolkata. Under the influence of cyclonic storm Mocha in the Bay of Bengal, the capital of West Bengal including Kolkata, the coastal districts of East and West Medinipur, North and South 24 Parganas and Howrah and Hooghly received heavy rain with thunderstorm on Monday night. The wind speed was so strong that many trees have fallen in all these districts including the capital Kolkata. In many places, many people have been injured due to trees falling on vehicles. Six people were reported injured in the capital Kolkata alone, while some people in other districts were also injured due to falling trees.
In front of Kolkata’s Victoria, a tree fell on the car itself, in which the car was completely twisted. One person aboard has been injured. A bike has also come in its grip. Similarly, many trees have fallen in Lake Gardens as well. Four people were injured due to falling trees in Lake Garden while one more person was injured in Maidan area. Burdwan district has also received rains accompanied by strong thunderstorms, due to which the public relations visit of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee has been disrupted. The Meteorological Department has told that winds have blown at a speed of 84 kilometers per hour in Kolkata and other districts, due to which trees etc. have fallen. The damage is currently being assessed.
It is noteworthy that Mocha cyclone has made landfall on Sittwe in Myanmar and Cox’s Bazar coast of Bangladesh. Heavy damage has been caused in both these countries, while under its influence, rains accompanied by strong thunderstorms have occurred in West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha.
