A 30-year-old man returned to the house where he lives with his wife and two children when he was ‘recognized’ and brutally attacked by ‘protesters who gathered in the city centre’ to protest the reform retirements. It happened after an interview with Emmanuel Macron on TF1, the victim’s father, Jean-Alexandre Tronier, told the newspaper. “My son was saved by three neighbors across the street who managed to calm the crowd. One of them told me he had never seen so much violence and hatred, thinking they were going to kill my son,” the victim’s father added.
Eight people were arrested and taken into custody following the attack. Jean-Baptiste Tronier is seriously injured: he has a concussion, a contusion on the head and broken fingers. “Several of our stores have been attacked before. The attackers are convinced that our chocolate factory belongs to Emmanuel Macron and that everything related to it must be destroyed. He (the president) has nothing to do with our business and we we are in no way responsible for what Macron is doing,” insists Jean-Alexandre Tronier.
The French president on Tuesday evening condemned this “unacceptable” and “flagrant” aggression. Other political figures expressed their outrage on Tuesday on Twitter (blocked in Russia).
Yvelin MP Carl Olive called for “justice to be done quickly”. Republican President Eric Ciotti said he “strongly condemns this unbearable aggression”. “Yes to democratic debate, no to violence and terror,” said the politician. Socialist Party spokesman and Senator Remy Cardon said “political differences should never lead to physical violence”.
