For the first time since 2003, Iraqis are seeing an improvement in the production of electrical energy, bringing the daily supply hours to about 20 hours a day, whereas it did not exceed 8 or 10 hours a day.
Official spokesperson for the Ministry of Electricity, Ahmed Moussa, told Sky News Arabia: “We started preparing as the Ministry of Electricity from the end of the month of 11 until to now, and therefore there is an increase compared to what was achieved last year”. year of 3,500 megawatts following the completion of periodic maintenance of some units that were suspended due to the operation of the Maysan gas and investment station.
The tangible increase in the production of electrical energy had a positive impact on the economic situation of a large segment, which had to pay monthly sums to the owners of generators of around $100.
Despite this, observers believe that Iraq still needs several years to achieve a major leap in the area of self-sufficiency.
For his part, Qassem Al-Tamimi, a researcher in economic affairs, told Sky News Arabia: “Iraq has concluded interconnection agreements with some Gulf countries and other countries, and it is taking good steps to provide electricity during the current summer and possibly next summer.
He continued: “But in terms of self-sufficiency and sufficient local production for Iraq, I think this case will take many years.”
