The poetic verse “I knocked at the door” arouses controversy in Egypt. What’s the story?

– Published on:

The story began when second-year secondary school students at a number of school administration schools in Beni Suef complained about the difficulty of requesting an English translation, the answer to which was 4 choices, including the correct answer to the question.

The question was about the famous verse by the late Egyptian poet Ismail Sabri Pasha, one of the pioneers of the School of Revival Poets in modern Arabic poetry, who says: “I knocked at the door until I died … When my death died, she spoke to me.. She said to me: O Ismail, be patient, so I said: O Asma… the family of Sabri.

The reviewer asked the students to choose the correct translation from 4 English translations he placed for this verse.

Some students filmed this question and posted it on social networking sites which caused a lot of controversy as some saw that the question contained a difficulty from the exam author, while others saw that the question was easy and that the verse is very famous, and that the student must be educated. .

Education authorities in the governorate of Benisouif have decided to refer the teacher who organized the exam to the investigation, which has raised further questions about the charge for which he will be investigated.

Dr Saeed Ramadan, Director of the Beni Suef Governorate Media Department, told Sky News Arabia that:

Referring to the Governorate’s Education Ministry Undersecretary about the incident, he confirmed that the teacher wanted “fame and ride the trend” as he knew this issue would spread on social media. The review coincided with the outbreak of a major fire in the governorate two days ago which drew attention to him and helped spread this issue. There are requirements for asking questions and education authorities have found that this question violates those requirements. The question was very difficult and the instructions given so that the exam was at the level of an intermediate student. Not every student can even understand this verse so they can translate it.

It should be noted that Ismail Sabri Pasha, the author of the aforementioned verse, joined the judiciary until he became undersecretary of the Ministry of Haqqaniyya (currently Justice), and was appointed governor of Alexandria. He retired in 1907 and died on the 21st, 1923.
