Experts took thousands of digital images to create a stunning 3D reconstruction of the wreck, which now lies 350 nautical miles off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada.
Experts hope studies of the scans will reveal more mysteries surrounding what happened the night the ship crashed in 1912, after colliding with an iceberg in the Atlantic Ocean, killing around 1,517 of 2,224 people on board.
“There are still fundamental questions and questions to be answered about the ship,” Parks-Stevenson, one of the analysts on the investigations, told the BBC. “The model is one of the main steps towards evidence-based research, not speculation.”
The submersibles spent more than 200 hours taking 700,000 photos from all angles of the ship to create the 3D figure.
Experts believe that transporting the wreckage is very dangerous due to its fragility and the corrosion of much of it.
