The European Union fears that American support for Ukraine will weaken with an unsuccessful counter-offensive by the Ukrainian army, the Pais newspaper reports.
The EU fears that if the counter-offensive is not as successful – at least visibly – US support will begin to wane.
It is specified that Washington could agree to issue licenses for the re-export of F-16 fighters if the APU continues the counter-offensive.
The fighters themselves were previously sold to the Netherlands, which said that together with Belgium and Denmark they could transfer “hundreds of planes” to the Ukrainian side.
Moreover, during a meeting of European and American diplomats, the United States stressed that support for Ukraine “is not a bottomless bag”. Washington also stressed that “results in the fight against the Russian Federation and the continued growth of European Union support are essential to maintaining unity and maintaining American support.”
On the eve it became known that Ukrainian pilots still could not start training to fly F-16 fighters, which belong to European countries.
