Australia’s Parramatta City Gets First Indian-Origin Lord Mayor

In Australia, Indian-origin Sameer Pandey has been elected Mayor of Parramatta City Council. This is the first time that a person of Indian origin has reached the top council position in Australia. Labor Party councilor Samir Pandey was until now the Deputy Lord Mayor and was elected to the post vacated after former Mayor Donna Davies was elected to the Legislative Assembly. Parramatta is an important and historic suburb adjacent to Sydney in New South Wales, where people of Indian origin live in large numbers. About 11.2 percent of the people in this city with a population of more than 2.5 lakh are of Indian origin. Parramatta is one of Australia’s most multicultural areas and is considered one of the fastest growing urban centers in the country.
