Bhopal. A female cheetah brought from Namibia in Kuno National Park gave birth to four cubs two months ago, one of which died in the afternoon on Tuesday. State’s Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) JS Chauhan confirmed that a cub of female cheetah “Jwala” has died in Kuno. The autopsy of the cheetah cub was done, in which prima facie the cause of death of the cub appears to be due to weakness.
Principal Chief Conservator of Forests Chauhan said that the monitoring team found “Jwala” sitting at a place with her cubs in the morning. After some time, the female cheetah started walking with her cubs, the team saw three cubs walking with her, the fourth cub lying in place. After a brief stay by the monitoring team, the fourth cub was closely inspected. This cub was found lying on the ground unable to get up and even tried to raise its head after seeing the team. Immediately the veterinary team was informed. On reaching the team, they tried to give necessary treatment to the cheetah cub, but the cub died within a short time.
He told that from the beginning this cub has been the smallest, less active and lethargic among the four cubs. Generally, a weak cheetah cub is able to drink less milk than other cubs, due to which its chances of survival decrease and such cubs do not survive for a long time.
Chauhan told that generally the survival percentage of cheetah cubs in African countries is very less. According to the available literature and experts, the survival percentage in the open forest is only 10 percent. Only one in 10 cheetah cubs make it to adulthood in the wild. That is why the number of cubs born in general is the highest in cheetahs compared to other wild cat species.
