Local alcohol producers will have three years to adapt to the new “rules of the game”. Updated labeling of bottles will indicate not only the calorie content of the drink and the percentage of alcohol, but also its “contribution” to the development of cancer, liver cirrhosis and other diseases.
“Other food and drink packaging, if required, contains health warnings. This law puts alcoholic products on a par with them,” Donnelly said.
But despite the fact that the European Commission has already authorized the use of such labels, the wine-producing countries of Europe (France, Spain, Italy) consider such a step unacceptable. However, for Ireland itself, one of the highest drinking countries in the world, the move seems logical. A 2019-2020 study found that 60% of local thugs get drunk every month. A recent survey by the Irish Department of Health found that 79% of respondents, mostly young people between the ages of 15 and 24, were unaware of the risk of developing breast cancer from alcohol, 60 % were unaware of the threat of bowel cancer, 52% and 49% were unaware of the association of alcohol with stomach ulcers and high blood pressure.
