There were reports of overnight airstrikes in at least one area after the ceasefire took effect last night, and otherwise some residents spoke of relative calm.

7 day truce

The armistice was agreed during talks held in the Saudi city of Jeddah on Saturday after fierce fighting that lasted 5 weeks between the army and paramilitary rapid support forces. Saudi Arabia and the United States are following this truce, which aims to allow the delivery of humanitarian aid.

The two countries issued a joint statement on Tuesday evening saying that preparations have begun for humanitarian relief operations.

Activists have written to the UN envoy to Sudan to welcome the ceasefire agreement, but have complained of massive human rights abuses against civilians which they say occurred as the fighting was intensifying and demanded an investigation.

Activists and aid workers said neighborhood committees, which were at the forefront of local relief efforts in the capital, Khartoum, are preparing to receive aid, noting that large amounts of aid Arrivals in Port Sudan on the Red Sea coast have not yet been distributed, pending security clearances.

Violations before the start of the armistice

Doctors Without Borders, which runs projects in 10 states in Sudan, said violence had broken out in parts of the country, including towns in the western Darfur region. Sudan’s Health Ministry said in a statement that Rapid Support Forces attacked and occupied Ahmed Qasim Hospital in Bahri shortly before the ceasefire, and also stationed themselves in another Bahri hospital on Tuesday morning, which the Rapid Support Forces called “lies”. .”

The ceasefire agreement raised hopes for a break in the war, which has driven nearly 1.1 million people from their homes, more than 250,000 of whom have fled to neighboring countries.

Although fighting has continued during previous ceasefire periods, this is the first ceasefire based on a formal agreement between the two sides after negotiations.

The deal includes a monitoring mechanism involving the military and the Rapid Support Forces, as well as representatives from Saudi Arabia and the United States, who brokered the deal after talks in Jeddah.
