New Delhi. A Delhi court will on Friday pronounce its verdict on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s plea seeking a no-objection certificate to obtain a “normal passport”.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Vaibhav Mehta reserved his judgment in the case after hearing arguments on Friday.Rahul Gandhi was disqualified as an MP by a court in Gujarat’s Surat after he was convicted in a criminal defamation case I went. After this, Rahul had returned the diplomatic travel documents.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is an accused in the National Herald case and Bharatiya Janata Party leader Subramanian Swamy is the complainant. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Vaibhav Mehta reserved his order after hearing the arguments on Friday. During the arguments, BJP leader Subramanian Swamy opposed the plea saying “there is no substance in it” and that passports should be issued for only one year and renewed every year.

He said, “This is a special case. Passport should not be issued for ten years. This is wrong.” Swamy also said in his plea that Rahul’s citizenship was also questionable as he holds UK citizenship. Advocate Tarannum Cheema, appearing for Rahul, objected to this and claimed that citizenship Two petitions seeking criminal action on the issue of FIRs have already been dismissed by the High Courts.

The counsel requested the court to issue the passport for ten years as the High Courts have granted such relief in more serious offenses whereas in the present case the charges have not even been framed. It may be noted that the National Herald case pertains to BJP leader Swamy’s case. Based on a private criminal complaint, in which he has leveled charges of cheating, conspiracy and criminal breach of trust against Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and others.
