Speaking to their supporters today, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his rival Kemal Kilicdaroglu urged Turks to turn out in large numbers to vote and participate in the second round of presidential elections.
8 million voters will decide the outcome
Both candidates aim to win the support of the eight million voters who did not vote in the first round. According to data from the Supreme Election Commission, turnout in the first round exceeded 87%, including expat votes. The first round, which took place on May 14, showed Erdoğan’s superiority over Kilicdaroglu. The opposition sees parliamentary and presidential elections as its best chance to oust Erdogan from power. Polling stations will open to more than 60 million voters at 8 a.m. (0500 GMT).
What came in Erdogan’s last word?
Addressing a crowd of his flag-waving supporters in Istanbul’s Beykoz district during a recent campaign rally, Erdogan called on voters to turn out in droves, adding:
We won’t lose anyone who votes in the first round. We will encourage those who were unable to go to the polls in the first round. Are we massively finishing the job we left unfinished on May 14 by widening the gap tomorrow?
What came in Kilicdaroglu’s last word?
Kilicdaroglu, backed by the six-party opposition alliance, said:
Everyone who loves Turkey should vote in the second round. If you really want it, we’ll all get out of this black hole together. I speak to all of us, whatever their point of view or their way of life. This is the last issue. Everyone who loves their country should go to the polls.
