National pride

– Published on:

With the inauguration of the new Parliament building on Sunday, the country felt a sense of pride and recognized that the country needed a new Parliament building, which was completed by the government. For the last three decades, it is being felt that after 2026 it will be impossible for all the members to sit in the Parliament House built by the British because by then the number of members of both the Houses will increase.

In fact, when the British had constructed the Parliament House, then the technical requirements were not as much as they are today. The number of members was also fixed by the Constituent Assembly in 1949. The question is that those who believe that there was no need for a new building, do they not know how much the population has increased from 1949 to 2023. When the Parliament House was built in 1927, the population of undivided India was 30 crores and today it has become 140 crores. Therefore, the number of members of both the Houses will also increase.

The truth is that during PV Narasimha Rao’s government or Dr. Manmohan Singh’s, both Lok Sabha Speakers Shivraj Patil and Meera Wumar felt the need for a new building of Parliament and urged the government to make efforts in this direction. But no government either understood the need for the construction of a new building or they deliberately did not get the construction work done. Whatever may be the reason, the present government also understood the need for the construction of the new building and got it completed in time.

Now there are two Parliament Houses. The old one is already there, now a new building has been built. In the old building, the electrical wires had to be monitored after every session. The wall was very strong but once when Samajwadi leader Mulayam Singh was sitting in his room having lunch, some debris fell from the ceiling. In this way, there was a danger to the safety of the members in the old building as well as there were inconveniences.

Apart from this, when the Parliament is in session, a delegation of foreign Parliamentarians also comes. Their sitting area in the old building was very narrow and uncomfortable. Would the foreign guests not want to feel at those places that what is the fault of the Government of India in this, the British have built this building. This was the condition of the central room. Whenever the reporters had to go to cover the joint session or the President’s address, the space used to fall short. Not only this, looking at the media gallery made of such distractions, it seemed as if it is a haveli of ancient times where one has to sit under compulsion. Representatives of some political parties did not attend this glorious occasion of inauguration, this was their way of expressing displeasure against the government, the number of those who expressed disagreement with the opposition’s protest is also not less. This is the beauty of democracy. But one thing should always be kept in mind that protest is also tied to the peg of morality. The protest should not be of such a nature that opposing the government means expressing views against national pride. Whether it is party or opposition, the importance of constitutional institutions is above the interests of all. (sp)
