The ocean is the source of our life

June 8 is World Oceans Day. The theme for the year 2023 World Oceans Day is: “Oceans: The tides are turning”. The ocean is the source of our life, and human life, as well as all other living things on our planet, depend on the ocean. The ocean covers more than 70 percent of the Earth’s surface, yet only a fraction of its water has been explored. The ocean produces at least 50% of the total oxygen present on Earth and is home to most of Earth’s biodiversity, the protein used by more than 1 billion people worldwide also comes mainly from the sea. Despite being completely dependent on it, the ocean receives only a small fraction of our attention and resources compared to its enormous impact on our lives.

The United Nations designated June 8 as “World Oceans Day” at the 63rd session of the United Nations General Assembly. The United Nations hopes that countries in the world can take this opportunity to pay attention to the ocean on which humans depend, and appreciate the rich value contained in the sea. Also, it examines the adverse effects of global pollution and excessive consumption of fishery resources on the marine environment and marine life.

The United Nations Environment Development Program and Ocean Conservation jointly released a report on the state of the marine environment. The report said that although the international community and some countries have made great efforts to curb marine pollution, the problem is still very serious. Pollutants released by humans into the ocean pose a threat to people’s own safety and health, threaten the breeding grounds of wild animals, and damage marine facilities.

The establishment of “World Ocean Day” has created a platform for the international community to address the challenges of the ocean, and it has given China the opportunity to further publicize the importance of the ocean and increase public awareness of the ocean. A new opportunity has also been provided.
