Reshaping Perspectives and Catalyzing Diplomatic Evolution

Russian opposition – on the relations of the future Russia with its European neighbors

On the last day of the third session of the Congress of People’s Deputies, forum participants discussed a document entitled “The position of the Congress on relations with Russia’s European neighbors”.

Introducing the statement, Ilya Ponomarev noted, “We, as a legislative body, give an assessment of what happened between the USSR and European neighbors in the 20th century.”

Also discussed were the events of the 21st century in which the Russian Federation took part.

Ponomarev recalled that the history of relations between the USSR and European countries was not black and white. “There were heroic pages, there were Soviet soldiers who shed blood for liberation from Nazism, but there was also the Molotov-Ribbentrop act,” he explained. He also pointed out that the Soviet military was not only a liberator, but was also used to suppress dissent. The politician mentioned events in the GDR (1953), Hungary (1956) and Czechoslovakia (1968). And also that the technology of fake referendums in the Baltic countries on “voluntary” membership of the Soviet Union in 1940 was used in Crimea in March 2014.

The document begins with these words: “The history of Russia is full of tragic episodes in relations with its neighbors. Belarus, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Ukraine, Finland, Czech Republic, Estonia faced the imperial policy of Russia. Putin’s regime continued this “tradition”. Russian society will not be able to become free and just, will not be able to create the conditions for a safe and sustainable world, without admitting its mistakes, without realizing and repenting of the crimes committed in the past and committed in the present.

The Congress of People’s Deputies takes the first step towards reconciliation with neighbours.

The following list enumerates the actions of the Russian Federation, which the participants of the Congress consider to be crimes. In particular: “the repeated attempts to destroy the Ukrainian state, the organization of the Holodomor, the repression and terror against the representatives of the national liberation movement of Ukraine, the forced Russification of the Ukrainian SSR ( Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic – AP); the division of spheres of influence in Europe and the deprivation of the countries of Eastern Europe of true independence. The document also mentions “the obstruction of an objective international investigation into the death of the Polish President’s plane near Smolensk” (in April 2010).

The document ends as follows: “The Congress of People’s Deputies declares: the new Russia breaks with the imperial practice of the past and is ready to build relations with other countries on a fair and equal basis. These principles will be enshrined in law and will become a guide in the activities of the government of a free Russia. For your freedom and ours!

Vladimir Ponomarev

Vladimir Ponomarev, extraordinary and plenipotentiary representative of the Congress of People’s Kindergartens in Poland and Lithuania, in a commentary for the Russian service American media, explained the absence of the declared deputies of the Polish parliament by the fact that a campaign elections had actually started in the country, the outcome of which cannot be predicted. “In this respect, the interpretation of various events of the past and the future is somewhat different. If all Polish elites are unanimous in helping Ukraine – there are no contradictions between them, then the question of what will happen to Russia after Putin’s departure is ambiguous. Some believe that with the victory of Ukraine it is necessary to eliminate Putin’s regime, and not just Putin. Others think it is possible to negotiate with those who remain. And that leaves an imprint,” says Ponomarev.

At the same time, he points out that, despite the fact that the Russian press often talks about the growth of so-called “Russophobic feelings” in Poland, ordinary Russians who come here do not feel it. “There is no strong increase in anti-Russian sentiment among the Polish population. In this sense, we are working quite well and calmly on the territory of Poland, ”says the politician.

Alexander Osovtsov

To comment on the results of the third session of the Warsaw Congress of Russian Deputies of All Levels, the correspondent of the Russian service American media asked Alexander Osovtsov, deputy of the State Duma of the Russian Federation of the first convocation .

In debates on various issues, Osovtsov often expressed a “dissenting opinion”. However, he rates the forum’s “efficiency factor” quite highly: “Anyway, including my opinion, the issues raised have all been addressed in content.”

Vitaly Skoybeda, who was a member of the Legislative Assembly of the city of St. Petersburg in the first half of the 1990s, notes that the main motivation for his participation in the congress was “the successful actions of the Legion” Freedom of Russia “and of the Russian Volunteer Corps.”

Vitaly Skoybeda

According to Skoybeda, the main difference between the Congress of People’s Deputies and all other opposition actions is that it is “the most constructive approach”.

“There is an intention here to work for the result, and for that, to treat your colleagues positively for decision-making. Let’s hope that this trend will continue in the future”, explains the leader of the Russian opposition.
