Experiments confirm the ability of artificial intelligence to produce drugs

– Published on:

The researchers pointed out the effectiveness of this technology in reducing the manufacturing cost of the drug and shortening its production period. The rapid development of artificial intelligence is reaching the field of pharmaceutical industry.

Soon, pharmaceutical companies will be able to create advanced treatments using these technologies.

Researchers at Ohio University have developed an artificial intelligence framework called G⊃2;Retro that is able to handle a wide range of potential chemical reactions.

It carefully selects the interactions that will work best to create a particular drug. To dig deeper into the effectiveness of AI in drug production, researchers conducted a case study to see if G2Retro could accurately predict the ingredients of four drugs.

The drug is intended for the treatment of anemia, skin diseases, heart failure and another for the treatment of fungal infections in women.

The results exceeded expectations, say the Ohio State University researchers. This step was preceded by another Japanese company which succeeded in producing an advanced treatment for Alzheimer’s disease using artificial intelligence techniques.

According to the researchers, this step helps discover molecules that may interact with disease proteins and determine what drug is needed to attack the disease.

The pharmaceutical industry usually takes many years for pharmaceutical companies as it goes through the stages of preclinical testing and applied testing on disease samples.. until it is tested on humans, in plus the high cost of drug innovation.

It typically costs around $3 billion to bring a new drug to market, yet nearly 90% of man-made experimental drugs fail.

Academic and pharmacology researcher, Dr. Mays Absi:

  • The drug production process is long and complex and may take 15 to 20 years, and it is likely to fail in the end.

  • Artificial intelligence also promises to help the drug industry, as it allows, for example, to design the molecule in a better way and more appropriate to the chemical reactions that occur during treatment.

  • Artificial intelligence can also determine the best chemical reactions that give us a molecule, which saves a lot of effort and time that is spent at present.

  • There is a question about intellectual property rights in light of the increasing use of artificial intelligence for drug development.

  • The positive side of the matter is that the drug will be developed in a shorter period of time, and it is likely to be at a lower price that will treat more people.
