India and America: Meaning of “Shared Values”

Recently Prime Minister Narendra Modi ended his visit to America. Since 2014, he has visited the US six times, but this visit was raised to the level of a “state visit” for the first time. Apart from delivering a speech in the US Congress, the two countries also signed several agreements on cooperation in technology and military industries. There has also been a lot of hype about “shared values” between the US and India. The US says that the relationship between the US and India is that of the two “largest democracies”. But the practical purpose behind this claim is clear. On the one hand, the Ukraine crisis has turned the United States into the most dangerous international hotspot it has faced since the end of the Cold War. On the other hand, America has seen a difficult dilemma by pressing against China. What America needs most at this time is to get a powerful ally in the Indian Ocean, although it will come at a cost. In pursuit of its objective, the US may also ignore India’s “human rights record” and close Indo-Russian relations. The political systems of the US and India have been like this since their inception, but the relationship between the two There have been many ups and downs. In the 1950s, India’s late great leader, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru jointly with the Chinese leader launched the immortal program of the “Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence”. India has also played a leading role in the Non-Aligned Movement, due to which India has long been an unwanted country in the eyes of the US. However, in order to achieve its larger strategic goals, the US has become accustomed to selectively forgetting things it once emphasized. The US has provided India with an array of advanced military equipment, which has clearly formally confirmed its geopolitical purpose. That is, he wants India to get rid of its dependence on Russia in terms of arms supply and isolate China in terms of economic cooperation. For this purpose, the US is ready to provide technical assistance to India, sell advanced drones and agree on joint production of military aircraft engines. America’s basic objective is that India will be allowed to stand on its side on international affairs. It is right for political leaders to make foreign policy according to their national interests, but it is not right to give up independent policy in the name of “shared values”. India is a vast developing country that is heavily dependent on the outside world in the areas of markets, energy, high technology and raw materials. There is no similarity between India and America from the economic point of view. On the other hand, India is also a country with a large population, where millions of people live below the absolute poverty line. Due to many domestic and foreign reasons, India needs to stay away from the whirlpool of international conflicts and concentrate on its economic development. The diplomatic strategy of independence and non-alignment is the most valuable spiritual and diplomatic heritage of India. It is in India’s best interest to adopt an independent non-aligned policy. It is the most valuable political decision taken by the wise leaders of India based on the fundamental interests of the nation, and it is also confirmed by historical facts. For India, it is not a wise move to deviate from long-standing principles and fall into the imaginary realm of “shared values”.(Credits- China Media Group, Beijing)
