The Income Tax Department has issued a warning to PAN users that they must link their PAN with Aadhaar. Time has been given till June 30, 2023 for this. As per the new instructions of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), certain consumers have been exempted from PAN Aadhaar linking. In such a situation, if you come in the list of exempted categories, then you will not need to link PAN with Aadhaar. At the same time, the users who have to link and do not link within the time limit, then they may have to face a lot of trouble.

Link PAN-Aadhaar by paying penalty

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) had last April extended the last date for linking PAN with Aadhaar by 3 months to June 30, 2023, on March 31. According to CBDT, till April, more than 51 crore PANs have been linked with Aadhaar. However, now the penalty for linking PAN with Aadhaar has also been fixed at Rs 1000. PAN can be linked with Aadhaar by paying a fine on the NSDL website.

These people are exempted from linking PAN-Aadhaar

According to the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), certain people in the country have been exempted from PAN-Aadhaar linking. Such PAN users include residents of the states of Assam, Jammu & Kashmir and Meghalaya and members of other exempted categories. However, exempted PAN users can voluntarily link PAN and Aadhaar.

Category List of Users Exempted from PAN-Aadhaar

The requirement of linking Aadhaar with PAN is not applicable to 4 categories of users, which include-

Residents of the states of Assam, Jammu & Kashmir and Meghalaya. Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) as per Income Tax Act 1961. Any person who was of the age of 80 years or more at any time during the previous year. Persons who are not citizens of India. Those who fall in any of the above categories are not required to link their PAN with their Aadhaar till the deadline.
