Fred the ghost pointed to the location of his own body – What’s right and wrong in Australia’s most famous ghost story?

– Published on:

Frederick Fisher was an English merchant who was caught in possession of counterfeit banknotes. Whether unintentional or not, Fisher was immediately sentenced to 14 years in the penal colony of Australia.

Got freedom because of education

Fred, on the other hand, was an educated man, could read and write, and with this skill he was able to buy his freedom in Australia after serving half his sentence, in 1822. He further requested freedom financial, which was granted and he became a large owner of land and a farm in addition to establishing himself in the production of paper.

In 1825, Fred got into a fight with a carpenter over a dispute over a labor contribution and was soon returned to stone. Before entering the stone, Fred asked his neighbor, George Worall, to keep an eye on the estate and signed papers that George would be caretaker of the estate while Fred was inside. But when Fred was released six months later, he discovered that George had transferred all of his assets to his name.

On June 17, 1826, Frederick Fisher disappeared. George Worrell said he had decided to return to the UK and three weeks later George sold all of Fred’s possessions, claiming it was at his request. Would send the product to Fred in the UK.

Fred disappears

Four months after Fred disappeared, a man named John Farley showed up with a remarkable story to tell. He claimed to have seen Fred dead, that is, as a ghost, sitting on the railing of a bridge. The ghost didn’t say a word but raised his hand and pointed to a horse nearby. Then he disappeared.

No one paid attention to John Farley’s story, but the police thought it would be more appropriate to investigate Fred’s whereabouts, as there was no evidence of his trip to Great Britain. Brittany. And in the end, it was decided to leave Farley and dig into the horse yard he said the ghost had pointed out. Or so the story goes.

And remarkably, it didn’t take long for the police to find Fred Fisher’s body.

George arrested

George Worrall was arrested for the murder, he certainly had a motive but there was little or no evidence against him. He initially denied murder, but later confessed and was promptly hanged. It should be noted that even though the trial took place in the early decades of the 19th century, the justice system had moved beyond considering a ghost story. The court was therefore not allowed to hear the story of John Farley and that story played no part in the execution of George Worrell.

It is Australia’s most famous ghost story, a story that is still prophesied and speculated upon.

Did Farley really see Fred’s ghost that day? Otherwise, why would he lie about it? Maybe Farley killed Fred himself and covered it up by pretending to see the ghost? Did he witness the murder but was too scared to tell the killers and made up the ghost story? Maybe there was a real person on the railing, disguised as a ghost, who had tricked Farley?

No one knows for sure, but there’s no doubt that George killed Fred.

Album?

Today, by contrast, many believe that Australia’s most famous ghost story is a dish from start to finish, concocted by a Sidney magazine at the time in the hope of gaining more readers. But others count it from time to time.

In the documents of the authorities of the time, there is no mention of John Farley or ghosts, but it is recorded that the body was found where there were large bloodstains on the bank of the river and caught people’s attention. Two natives were asked to help with the search, as they knew the area and its nature better than others. They found human fatty tissue in the river and were able to trace it to the grave.

Whatever is so true and correct in the story of the murder of Fred Fisher does not change the fact that Australians love him and in the town of Campbelltown an annual ghost festival is held among other things in honor of the ghost of Fred.

The name of the river that led to the grave, the same one the fat was found in, was changed to Ghost Fisher River and dedicated to Fredrick Fisher.

And although the river was thankfully turned into a drainage basin long ago, it is still Ghost Fisher in the minds of Australians and recalls their most beloved ghost story.
