The recent joint statement by President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while seemingly promising, raises a specter of concern for India’s diplomatic sovereignty. This concern becomes particularly poignant in light of India’s recent stance on the Ukraine crisis and its decision to purchase oil from Russia despite US pressure.

India, a nation that has historically adhered to a policy of non-alignment, has shown its strength and determination on the international stage by standing its ground against US pressure to cease oil purchases from Russia. This move, a testament to India’s independent foreign policy, comes at a time when the Ukraine crisis has essentially become a proxy war between the US and Russia.

The joint statement, however, paints a picture of India aligning itself closely with US interests. While the partnership is touted as being based on shared democratic values and mutual trust, it raises the question: Is India compromising its diplomatic independence and risking its potential to become a world superpower?

The timing of this statement-cum-agreement is also noteworthy. It comes amidst a war in Ukraine, a conflict that is essentially a power struggle between the US and Russia. By aligning itself so closely with the US, India risks alienating Russia, a long-standing ally, and other nations that may view this partnership as a shift towards US hegemony.

Furthermore, the partnership could potentially corner India into following US diplomacy in the region. This could undermine India’s independent foreign policy and its ability to make decisions based on its national interests.

The US-India Comprehensive Global and Strategic Partnership, as the joint statement outlines, is anchored in a “new level of trust and mutual understanding.” It speaks of a diverse partnership that will advance the aspirations of both nations, grounded in respect for human rights, democracy, freedom, and the rule of law. While these are undoubtedly noble ideals, it is essential to scrutinize the potential implications for India’s sovereignty.

India, with its rich cultural heritage and history of non-alignment, has always prided itself on its independence and sovereignty. It has navigated the complex world of international relations with a steadfast commitment to its national interests. The new partnership, while promising on the surface, raises concerns about India’s ability to maintain this independent stance.

The joint statement emphasizes cooperation through various multilateral and regional groupings, particularly the Quad, to contribute to a “free, open, inclusive, and resilient Indo-Pacific.” While such cooperation is crucial in today’s interconnected world, it is equally important to ensure that it does not lead to a situation where India becomes a pawn in the larger geopolitical game.

The partnership, as the statement suggests, spans “the seas to the stars.” However, it is crucial to ask: At what cost? Is India ready to align its interests so closely with those of the United States that it risks losing its independent voice on the global stage?

Furthermore, the emphasis on shared principles of democracy, freedom, and the rule of law, while commendable, should not overshadow the unique challenges and realities that India faces. It is essential to remember that the application of these principles may vary based on the socio-cultural and economic contexts of each country.

While the US-India partnership holds significant potential, it is crucial to ensure that it does not compromise India’s sovereignty or lead to an over-dependence on US diplomacy. As India continues to engage with the United States and other global powers, it must do so with a clear understanding of its national interests and a firm commitment to its independence and sovereignty.
