Reshaping Perspectives and Catalyzing Diplomatic Evolution

US President Joe Biden Proposes Expansion of UN Security Council to Counterbalance Russia and China

US President Joe Biden is reportedly seeking to expand the list of permanent members in the United Nations Security Council. This move is seen as an effort to counterbalance the influence of Russia and China within the council. The revelation was made by the British newspaper “The Telegraph,” which cited White House National Security spokesman John Kirby. Biden is expected to address this proposal during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly.

According to the same report, it is believed that Biden will push for the inclusion of 5 or 6 countries to attain permanent membership in the council. The potential countries include Japan, Germany, India, Brazil, and South Africa. However, it remains uncertain whether these “proposed permanent members” will possess the veto power.

In response to these statements, the Kremlin commented on the need for reforms in the UN Security Council to include nations that have gained significant influence in recent times.

The 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly is set to commence soon. This session will feature a summit on Sustainable Development Goals, a global financing summit, and three high-level meetings focusing on health, climate, and youth. Additionally, a special Security Council meeting concerning Ukraine is scheduled for the upcoming Wednesday.

Further insights from The Telegraph suggest that Biden’s call for expansion aims to dilute the influence of China and Russia. The US president is urging the 193 UN member nations to reconsider the current structure of the Security Council.

Another article from The Kyiv Independent reiterates Biden’s intention to reassess the architecture of the Security Council. John Kirby emphasized that Biden would support the inclusion of more members.

The move by the US president to propose an expansion of the United Nations Security Council has been confirmed by John Kirby, the spokesperson for the White House National Security Council.

It’s worth noting that the demand for reform in the UN Security Council has been longstanding. Countries like Germany have been advocating for a change for many years. However, achieving this reform has been challenging.

The proposed expansion of the UN Security Council by President Joe Biden is a significant move in the realm of international diplomacy. It remains to be seen how member nations will respond to this proposal and what implications it will have on the global stage.
