Donald Trump’s former personal lawyer and ex-New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani has declared himself bankrupt. He filed for protection from creditors, saying his debt obligations amount to $153 million with total assets ranging from $1 million to $10 million, the AP reported.
A significant amount of debt is the $148 million total fine in the anti-defamation lawsuit. His trial against Giuliani ended last week.
The plaintiffs were poll workers Wandrea Moss and her mother Ruby Freeman. The reason was Giuliani’s statements that during the counting of votes in the 2020 US presidential election, women committed fraud with ballots received by mail.
Recently, the court ordered Giuliani to pay compensation to the women in the amount of $148 million.
Payments are usually given 30 days before law enforcement can become involved. However, on Wednesday, a judge ordered Giuliani to make the payment immediately.
The amount exceeds the estimated wealth of the ex-mayor of New York, and as a result, Giuliani declared himself bankrupt on Thursday. His representative said that the defense plans to appeal the verdict, AP reports.
The agency also notes that personal bankruptcy does not allow you to escape from debts in such cases if they were awarded for intentional harm to others.
