US-led coalition base in Iraq hit by UAV

A military base in northern Iraq used by US and coalition forces fighting ISIS was attacked by a drone on Monday, US and Iraqi officials said.

The US has about 2,500 troops stationed in Iraq and about 900 in Syria. The international coalition has been fighting the Islamic State (IS) group since 2014.

The number of strikes against coalition forces sending troops to Iraq to fight ISIS has increased since the war between Israel and Hamas began.

On Monday, a drone was launched towards a base located near Erbil airport in Iraqi Kurdistan, Yehia Rasoul, the Iraqi prime minister’s military affairs spokesman, said in a statement.

The document talks about those injured as a result of the attack.

A US military official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed to Agence France Presse that the drone attacked “American and coalition forces” stationed at the air base.

“We are still awaiting an assessment of injuries and damage (if any),” the source added.

Shortly after the drone attack, the Islamic Resistance in Iraq said it launched a drone to strike another base near Harir, northeast of Erbil.

This base also houses American troops and forces from other coalition countries.

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq is a formation of armed groups affiliated with the Hashed al-Shaabi coalition of former paramilitaries that are now integrated into the regular Iraqi armed forces.

Since October 17, the US military has counted 103 attacks on US troops in Iraq and Syria.

Most of them were claimed by the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, which opposes American support for Israel in its war against Hamas.

In early December, the US Embassy in Baghdad came under rocket fire. No faction claimed responsibility for the attack, the first since the start of the Gaza war.
