Britain’s new Foreign Secretary David Lammy backed an “immediate ceasefire” in Gaza, in his first position since being appointed on Friday, just as his predecessor did.
Lammy, who took over the foreign ministry after Labor won the legislative elections, said on Thursday that “the job now is to get to work with tireless diplomacy to support an immediate ceasefire and move towards getting those hostages out,” adding, “I will do all I can diplomatically to support Joe Biden in bringing about that ceasefire.”
The new British Labour government’s policy is expected to follow the Conservatives’ lead on the Israeli invasion of Gaza.
Labour Party suffered symbolic defeats in the elections to candidates who focused their campaign on the recent conflict Israel escalated following the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel and criticized Keir Starmer’s position, which they considered too pro-Israel, in a sign that the issue will remain sensitive for the next government.
David Lammy, 51, succeeded Conservative David Cameron as Foreign Secretary.
