UN condemns Israel’s decision to ban UNRWA

World Food Programme director Cindy McCain : The decision to ban the agency's activities will have terrifying consequences for food security and much more for the most vulnerable people.

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) is indispensable in providing vital aid in the Gaza Strip. This was stated on the social platform X by the Executive Director of the UN World Food Programme (WFP) Cindy McCain.

The decision to ban the UN agency “will have devastating consequences for food security and much more for the most vulnerable,” she said. The WFP said it was able to provide food assistance to only 260,000 people in October, “about 20% of those who need it every month.”

on Monday, Israel’s parliament (Knesset) decided to ban the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) from the country within 90 days, refusing US and other foreign efforts to keep it as the country’s primary supplier of humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people.

the Knesset (the parliament) banned the agency, which operates in Israel according to a 1967 treaty, from conducting “any activity” or providing any service inside Israel, including the areas of annexed East Jerusalem, Gaza, and the West Bank.

Israeli lawmakers also voted to declare UNRWA a terror group, effectively banning any direct interaction between the UN agency and the Israeli state.
