Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova has ironically commented on Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s congratulations to Donald Trump on his victory in the 2024 US election.
She noted that Zelenskyy’s note expressed appreciation for Trump’s stance, stating, “I appreciate President Trump’s commitment to the ‘peace through strength’ approach to global affairs. It is this principle that will bring a just peace to Ukraine. I hope that together we will bring it to life.” He further underscored his hope for continued bipartisan support for Ukraine in the US, signing off, “Your Volodymyr – Burisma – Zelenskyy.”
“As the saying goes, the affectionate child of two mothers sucks,” Zakharova responded sarcastically on her Telegram channel, making fun of Zelenskyy’s plea to both political parties in the United States. Her statement suggests that Ukraine is trying to win over everyone and is looking for broad support despite political differences in the United States.
Zakharova’s comments called Zelenskyy’s approach as opportunistic and raised doubt on Ukraine’s loyalty to both US political parties. As Ukraine continues to seek bipartisan US support during Russia’s protracted dispute with the country, the exchange highlights the complexities in US-Ukraine-Russia relations.
