Trump claims election interference as Manhattan DA delays decision

In line with an agreement between Trump’s lawyers and the Manhattan DA’s office, the decision on whether to overturn the former president’s conviction has been postponed until November 19.

Former US President Donald Trump has been postponed in a case in which he was convicted of paying illegal hush money to adult film actress Stormy Daniels during the 2016 presidential election. Judge Juan Merchan approved the parties’ agreement to postpone the case for a week in New York.

Trump’s lawyers have requested time to present new arguments to the court about how the outcome of the presidential election will affect the trial. Judge Merchan has decided to postpone the trial until November 19, considering their requests.

Trump’s attorney, Emil Bove, asked the court to first suspend and then completely terminate Trump’s conviction “in order to avoid unconstitutional impediments to President Trump’s ability to govern.”

Former President Donald Trump went on trial on March 18, 2023, as the sole person charged in an investigation by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office. The charges were accepted by a grand jury after Trump illegally paid hush money to Daniels during the 2016 presidential election. Trump, who denied the charges against him, will stand trial in New York on April 15, 2024, and was found guilty by a jury on May 31.

The US Supreme Court ruled that Trump was “entitled to immunity” for certain actions he took while serving as president. However, the court did not grant immunity for Trump’s specific actions, allowing the case to proceed.

Trump’s lawyers plan to present new arguments to the court about how the case could be affected by the presidential election on Nov. 5. On Nov. 19, Judge Merchan will decide whether to overturn Trump’s “hush money” conviction. If so, Trump’s sentence will be announced on Nov. 26.

According to ABC News, Former President Donald Trump has been found guilty of 34 felony counts of falsifying business records after being indicted last year by a Manhattan grand jury, making him the first former president in American history to be convicted of a crime.

Prosecutors alleged that Trump engaged in a “scheme” to boost his chances during the 2016 presidential election through a series of hush money payments made by others and the falsification of New York business records to cover up that alleged criminal conduct.
