US President-elect Donald Trump’s lawyer Andrew Palcyk has filed a $10 billion claim with The New York Times (NYT) for criticism of the politician, the Columbia Journalism Review (CJR) reports.
According to the publication’s material, the lawyer’s letter refers to Peter Baker’s articles “For Trump, a Lifetime of Scandals Nears a Crucial Moment” from October 20 and Michael Schmidt’s “As Election Approaches, Former White House Chief of Staff John Kelly Warns Trump Will Rule Like a Dictator” from October 22.
The lawyer accused the journalists of “industrial-scale slander against political opponents” and working for the US Democratic Party.
On November 11, the NYT wrote that Trump’s opponents expect a campaign of retaliation from him — a “wave of revenge.” The article noted that the president-elect has a desire “to take revenge after numerous impeachments, investigations, indictments, and lawsuits against him.” According to NYT sources, if Matthew Whitaker or someone similar in views becomes attorney general, it will mean that Trump is “determined to punish his rivals.”
According to Reuters, the version that aired during the “60 Minutes” program on Oct. 6 did not include what the lawsuit calls a “word salad” response from Harris about the Biden administration’s influence on Israel’s conduct of the war.
“Former President Trump’s repeated claims against 60 Minutes are false,” a CBS News spokesperson said. “The lawsuit Trump has brought today against CBS is completely without merit and we will vigorously defend against it.”
According to Al-Jazeera Trump has repeatedly assailed the network on the campaign trail over the episode and has threatened to revoke CBS’s broadcasting licence if elected. CBS has said Trump backed out of his own planned interview with 60 Minutes.
