As Israel continues its attacks on Gaza, where it has massacred more than 40,000 innocent civilians, the spiritual leader of the Catholic world, Pope Francis, stated that it is necessary to investigate whether what is happening in the region constitutes genocide.
Pope Francis, in his book written for the Jubilee Year to be celebrated next year, also addressed Israel’s attacks on Palestine, where it has been carrying out massacres since October 2023. The Italian newspaper La Stampa, which published some sections from the book, which has not yet been published, shared the Pope’s words, “According to some experts, what is happening in Gaza bears the characteristics of a genocide. Whether this meets the technical definition determined by jurists and international organizations should be carefully investigated.”
Known for his sensitivity to the issue of migration, Pope Francis stated in his book that no country facing the problem of migration should be left alone and that no one should consider solving this problem alone with more restrictive and oppressive laws. At the same time, he also noted that indifference has become global.
The Pope also noted that humanity is lost when it comes to migration. He also commented, “I reaffirm here that it is absolutely necessary to address the causes of migration in the countries of origin.”
Pope Francis also touched on Gaza under the heading of migration in his book, saying, “I am thinking especially of our Palestinian brothers and sisters who left Gaza at a time when famine has struck and food and aid are hard to reach their land.”
SCMP writes, Pope Francis calls for genocide investigation into Israel’s attacks in Gaza.
Wikipedia officially added the term “Gaza genocide” appeared in recent discussions and on Wikipedia regarding the humanitarian crisis in Gaza following the Israeli forces’ attack, on civilians, hospital buildings, and basic infrastructure indiscriminately during the ongoing Israeli invasion of Gaza.
The characterization has been invoked in debates about international law, with advocates calling for investigations into potential breaches of the Genocide Convention, which prohibits acts committed with the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group. According to UNRWA, a few days ago, Israel banned UNRWA.
