Azerbaijani media claimed that the real reason why Israeli President Isaac Herzog did not attend the COP29 climate conference in Azerbaijan’s capital Baku was that “Türkiye did not allow the plane carrying Herzog to enter its airspace.”
Ankara confirmed that Israel requested overflights from Türkiye but they did not allow it.
A senior official from the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry told Azerbaijani media that “the reason for Herzog’s cancellation of the trip is not related to security, but to the ban imposed by Türkiye,” and noted that the plane carrying Herzog was not allowed to use Türkiye’s airspace.
According to Ynet News, The Israeli Presidential Office had officially announced that Israeli President Herzog’s trip to COP29 had been canceled “for security reasons.” However, Azerbaijani media reported that the real reason was Türkiye’s refusal to allow the Israeli Wing of Zion aircraft to fly through its airspace. Azerbaijani officials confirmed the accuracy of the local media report.
According to A News, Israeli President Isaac Herzog will not attend the COP29 U.N. climate summit in Azerbaijan due to “security reasons”, the presidency office said in a statement on Saturday.
Azerbaijani officials were disturbed by Israel’s report on the reason for the cancellation and tried to change the framework of the report through diplomatic contacts. Accordingly, it was stated that Israeli ministers who came to Baku had previously made commercial flights via Georgia, and why Herzog did not choose a similar route also caused Azerbaijan’s reaction.
According to DSA, “Baku is one of the safest cities in the world,” the source emphasized, noting that President Herzog himself had visited Azerbaijan on May 30 this year without incident. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also visited Azerbaijan in 2016.
