Trump threatens 100% tariffs on BRICS nations over potential new currency plans

US President-elect Donald Trump said he would impose 100% trade tariffs on goods from BRICS countries if they create a new currency or abandon the dollar.

“The idea that the BRICS countries are trying to abandon the dollar while we stand by and watch is over. We demand a commitment from these countries that they will not create a new BRICS currency or support another currency to replace the mighty US dollar, or they will face 100% tariffs and have to kiss goodbye to the idea of selling to the wonderful American economy,” he wrote in Truth Social.

Trump claims that “any country” that tries to replace the dollar for international trade will “say goodbye to America.”

According to CNBC, Donald Trump shaid, in a Truth Social post, said: “We require a commitment from these Countries that they will neither create a new BRICS Currency, nor back any other Currency to replace the mighty U.S. Dollar or, they will face 100% Tariffs, and should expect to say goodbye to selling into the wonderful US Economy.” At a summit of BRIC nations in October, Russian President Vladimir Putin accused the U.S. of “weaponizing” the dollar and described it as a “big mistake.”

“It’s not us who refuse to use the dollar,” Putin said at the time. “But if they don’t let us work, what can we do? We are forced to search for alternatives.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin, speaking at the Valdai plenary session on November 7, said that it was too early to talk about a single BRICS currency, as the countries of the association do not have such a goal yet.

According to Putin, in order to talk about a common currency, it is necessary to “achieve greater integration of economies with each other” and raise “the quality of economies to a certain level so that they are very similar, compatible in quality, in the structure of economies with each other.”
