Israel expands occupation in Syria following assad Regime’s fall protests erupt in Daraa

Following the overthrow of the Assad regime, Israel expanded its occupation of Syria. The Israeli army recently occupied two villages in the city of Daraa. Protesting the occupation, locals chanted slogans such as “Get out, Israel.”

Israel occupied the villages of ‘Cemle’ and ‘Maaraba’ in the Syrian city of Daraa, where the 24-year Assad regime was overthrown.

Following the overthrow of the regime, the Israeli army entered the buffer zone in the Golan region and advanced to within 25 kilometers of the capital Damascus. Following their latest invasion, the locals protested. Crowds came to the demonstrations with Syria’s new flags and chanted “Get out, Israel.”

During the demonstration, Israeli forces opened fire on the crowd from the hills where they were positioned. One person was injured in the Israeli army’s attack.

The Israeli army, which began destroying the military infrastructure and facilities of the army belonging to the Assad regime that was overthrown on December 8, expanded its occupation of the Syrian Golan Heights.

Having entered the buffer zone around the Golan Heights, the Israeli army carried the occupation further and came within 25 kilometers of the capital Damascus.

Israel has occupied the Golan Heights, which belong to Syria, since 1967. The boundaries of the buffer zone and the demilitarized zone were determined by the Withdrawal Agreement signed between Israel and Syria in 1974.

According to the UN Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF), the buffer zone “extends over 75 kilometers in length and ranges in width from approximately 10 kilometers in the center to 200 meters in the far south.”

Israel’s declaration was a “new episode in a series of Israeli aggressions on Syrian territories and a blatant violation of international law,” according to Daily Sabah, which quoted the foreign policy undersecretary from Doha.
