Murhaf Abu Kasra appointed head of Syrian ministry of defense as Assad’s regime falls, new interim government takes shape

Murhaf Abu Kasra has become the new head of the Syrian Ministry of Defense as part of the transitional government.

Also today, Assad Hassan al-Shibani was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs of Syria under the interim government. Abu Qasra, who is also known by the nom de guerre Abu Hassan 600, is a senior figure in the “Hayat Tahrir al-Sham” (HTS) group which ousted al-Assad from power this month and led numerous military operations during the Syrian revolution, the source said.

The command of the Free Syrian Army, which receives support from the United States and Turkey, made a statement about the end of Bashar al-Assad’s rule. The Russian Foreign Ministry emphasized that Assad had decided to leave his post and leave Syria, “giving orders for a peaceful transfer of power.” A TASS source in the Kremlin later added that Assad and his family had arrived in Moscow, where Russia had granted them asylum “for humanitarian reasons.”

On December 16, United States President-elect Donald Trump said Turkey was behind the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad’s government in Syria.

Earlier it became known that Assad attempted to contact Russia before leaving Syria.
