ICE raid shocks San Diego as agents storm Buona Forchetta restaurant during dinner rush

A routine dinner turned into chaos as federal agents raided San Diego’s iconic Italian restaurant, detaining workers and igniting a citywide uproar over immigration tactics.

On May 30, 2025, Buona Forchetta, a cherished Italian restaurant in San Diego’s South Park neighborhood, became the center of a controversial federal immigration enforcement operation. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, accompanied by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), executed a criminal search warrant at the establishment, leading to multiple arrests and igniting a firestorm of public outcry, according to KPBS Public Media.

The Operation Unfolds

Witnesses reported that around 4:30 p.m., federal agents descended upon Buona Forchetta and its adjacent wine bar, Enoteca Buona Forchetta. Agents, clad in tactical gear, entered the premises, handcuffing several employees and detaining at least three individuals. The operation disrupted the bustling dinner service, leaving patrons and staff in shock.

Claire Cody, an employee present during the raid, recounted the harrowing experience: “Ten federal agents came into part of our restaurant. They handcuffed my manager, saying they have a search warrant, and I just started crying because I knew what was happening”.

Community Reaction and Public Outcry

The aggressive nature of the raid, including the use of flash bang devices to disperse onlookers, drew immediate condemnation from community members and local officials. San Diego City Councilmember Stephen Whitburn expressed deep concern, stating, “People have a right to due process. Our neighbors who are immigrants are vital to the fabric of our city, and they deserve to live without fear or intimidation”.

Activist Pedro Rios, present during the incident, described the scene: “When I arrived, I saw that the workers were all sitting in chairs. They had plastic handcuffs around them. The ones that they took out, they not only placed handcuffs on them, but they also put chains on their legs as they were boarded onto the vehicles that transported them out of the area”.

Legal and Ethical Implications

The raid has sparked a broader debate about immigration enforcement practices, particularly the targeting of workplaces and the treatment of undocumented workers. Critics argue that such operations instill fear within immigrant communities and question the proportionality and humanity of the tactics employed.

In a letter to Mayor Todd Gloria, a San Diego constituent wrote, “This wasn’t a security operation. It was an act of fear-based political theater — targeted not at lawbreakers, but at line cooks and dishwashers. These raids are morally wrong, economically incoherent, and corrosive to the very idea of America as a shared project”.

Although no official statement has been issued by President Donald Trump regarding the Buona Forchetta raid, several pro-Trump social media pages have circulated supportive posts applauding the crackdown. These messages echo his administration’s continued hardline approach to immigration enforcement, which has drawn both praise from his base and condemnation from immigrant rights groups nationwide.

Impact on Buona Forchetta and the Local Economy

Buona Forchetta, renowned for its authentic Italian cuisine and community presence, was forced to close for the evening, resulting in significant financial losses and emotional distress among staff. Manager Renato Ametrano reported that the aggressive actions of the agents left employees traumatized, with several too shaken to return to work immediately.

The incident raises concerns about the broader implications for local businesses and the economy, particularly in industries reliant on immigrant labor.

The ICE raid on Buona Forchetta has ignited a critical conversation about immigration enforcement, workers’ rights, and community values. As investigations continue, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the human impact of policy decisions and the importance of balancing law enforcement with compassion and respect for individual rights.
