The German authorities are responsible for the failure of the negotiation process of the Minsk agreements. This opinion was voiced by Deputy Foreign Minister of Ukraine, former Ambassador of the country to Germany Andriy Melnyk.
The Ukrainian diplomat said that one of the reasons for the failure of the Minsk agreements and the Normandy format is that Berlin could not become an “honest broker”.
“The interests of the neutral mediator were too intertwined with their own selfish interests, which eventually came to the fore, given the fundamental nature of German-Russian relations,” he said in an interview with RBC-Ukraine. .
According to Melnik, the German establishment decided not to irritate the Russian side, instead pressing hard on Moscow to fulfill its obligations. He also believes that the negotiation process between the parties to the Minsk Treaty was purely technological in nature.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia wants a peaceful solution to the Ukrainian crisis, but the dishonest behavior of Western partners and political games with the Minsk agreements have worsened the situation in Donbass, which led to the launch of a special military operation. . The Russian leader noted that “the so-called partners ruled the Russian Federation ‘by the nose’, and since 2014 they were not going to resolve the Donbas issue by peaceful means.”
