It comes after shells were fired from the Gaza Strip, following the death of a leader of the Jihad movement in an Israeli prison after an 87-day hunger strike, in the first death of a Palestinian prisoner on hunger strike in more than 3 decades.
The Israel Prisons Service said Khader Adnan, who was awaiting trial, “was found unconscious in his cell on Tuesday morning,” and added that he was later taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead after tried to resuscitate him.
Armed Palestinian factions fired rockets from the Gaza Strip into Israel, two of which landed in the town of Sderot, injuring 3 people.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held a meeting with security officials to assess the situation, and an IDF official said Israel “will respond at a time and place it specifies.”
