Iran condemns Israeli attacks on Syria, calls for UN action over “Dangerous Escalation”

Tehran Blames US and Western Backing for Israeli Impunity

IRAN — Tehran has sharply condemned the recent Israeli airstrikes on Syrian territory, calling them a blatant act of aggression and a grave threat to regional stability. In a strongly-worded address to the UN Security Council, Iran’s Permanent Representative, Amir Saeed Iravani, labeled Israel’s actions as a deliberate escalation, citing its occupation of parts of Syria and repeated violations of international law.

Speaking during Thursday’s session of the UN Security Council, Iravani warned that Israel’s pattern of unprovoked military aggression, facilitated by what he described as “unconditional US and Western backing,”poses the most severe danger to peace and security across the region. His remarks echoed the growing sentiment across much of the Global South, where Western impunity toward Israeli military behavior continues to draw sharp criticism.

The Iranian envoy argued that Israel’s repeated bombardments of Syrian territory, particularly in Damascus and the southern Suwayda region, have gone unanswered due to the inertia of the Security Council and its failure to enforce any deterrent measures. He warned that the ongoing silence from the international community has emboldened Tel Aviv to act with impunity, pushing the region toward deeper instability.

According to Syrian state media and local reports, Israeli jets struck several locations in Damascus on Wednesday, including areas near the Ministry of Defense and the vicinity of the presidential palace. Simultaneously, drone raids were launched near Suwayda, a predominantly Druze region witnessing a fresh wave of unrest since mid-July. Civilian casualties were confirmed, though exact figures remain under verification.

The Israeli military, justifying the attacks, claimed they were aimed at deterring Syrian government forces allegedly involved in targeting Druze groups in the southern province. However, Damascus rejected this rationale, calling it a fabricated pretext for targeting sovereign infrastructure and undermining Syrian national unity.

Iravani’s remarks, according to Mehr News, that the ambassador directly blamed the United States for enabling Israel’s aggression, stating that without US logistical and political protection, such violations would not occur with such regularity.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed concern over the situation, condemning all forms of violence against civilians and urging restraint from all parties. While he did not name Israel directly, his office issued a statement warning that further military escalation in Syria could reignite broader regional conflict.

In recent months, Israel has ramped up aerial attacks across various Syrian provinces, reportedly targeting Iranian-linked assets and Hezbollah movements, but increasingly affecting government facilities and civilian areas. This latest wave of aggression has renewed calls from Iran, Russia, and several Global South nations for the UN to implement measures to hold Israel accountable for repeated breaches of Syrian sovereignty.

As Syria continues to reel from years of war, economic strangulation, and foreign intervention, observers warn that unchecked Israeli military activity risks plunging the region back into a deeper spiral of conflict, one where diplomatic channels remain deliberately paralyzed by political interests of Western powers.
