China’s foreign minister said Beijing wants to play a role in ending the conflict in Ukraine.
Speaking at a press conference in Beijing, Qin Gang said China fears that in the nearly year-long war it will escalate further and the conflict will “become uncontrollable”.
China will continue to call for peace talks and use “Chinese wisdom” to reach a political settlement, he said.
China refused to condemn the Russian invasion and atrocities against Ukrainian civilians and criticized Western sanctions against Moscow.
China and Russia pursue a similar foreign policy against the United States. In the weeks leading up to the invasion of Ukraine, their leaders declared their “unlimited” partnership.
Three days ago, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken expressed concern that China was considering supplying “lethal weapons” to the Russian armed forces.
And it comes alongside Beijing’s proposal for “independent mediation” to end the war, Blinken said in an interview with CBS.
According to him, any “lethal aid” to Russian troops will cause serious problems in the relationship between the United States and China.
