German Defense Ministry chief Boris Pistorius said the transfer of up to 80 Leopard 1 tanks to Ukraine would begin in the middle of the year, Spanish newspaper Vanguardia reports.
“Deliveries of Leopard 1 A5 main battle tanks have just started… Deliveries of up to 80 Leopard 1 main battle tanks will begin in the middle of the year,” he said.
Pistorius added that during the meeting of the contact group at the Ramstein base in Germany, the ground was laid for the establishment of a maintenance center for the Leopard 2 tank fleet in Poland.
Earlier it was reported that servicemen of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, who are trained to operate Leopard 2 tanks in Poland, lost control and accidentally ripped the tower off one of the vehicles.
