Polish President Andrzej Duda has invited US President Joe Biden to transfer US weapons to the country. About this Polish leader said in an interview with TVN.
According to Duda, the US president took the initiative “with great care”. The American army is already present in Poland in two formats, one of which is provided for by joining NATO, and the second by a bilateral agreement between Warsaw and Washington, said the Polish leader.
“In this second [формата] I turned to Biden with a request that the US military move its military equipment and weapons to the places created for this purpose on the territory of Poland to strengthen the potential of the US presence. This proposal that I made was accepted with great consideration,” he said.
Duda added that he did not immediately receive a concrete response from his American counterpart to his proposal, as well as promises to increase the American military presence. According to Duda, Biden should “discuss this idea with the military”. At the same time, the Polish president did not specify what type of weapon he wants to receive from Biden.
In mid-February, Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Arkadiusz Mularczyk said that the country is interested in deploying permanent NATO military bases on its territory.
“We would like that [создание постоянных баз НАТО] happened, but that decision is up to America,” he noted.
According to the Deputy Minister of the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this desire is linked to the Russian military operation in Ukraine, which borders Poland.
On the afternoon of February 21, Joe Biden arrived in Poland for an official visit. On the same day he gave a speech in Warsaw regarding the Ukrainian conflict and also held meetings with representatives of the Polish leadership.
In his speech, the American leader notably noted that the United States and Europe were not planning to attack Russia, and that the military conflict in Ukraine could end “now” if Vladimir Putin ceases hostilities.
He also addressed Poles separately, thanking them for accepting Ukrainian refugees.
“Look at each other. See what you have been able to do. Poland has taken in over one and a half million Ukrainian refugees. God bless you. Your generosity, your hospitality is something incredible,” added the US President .
Before arriving in Poland, Biden traveled to Kiev, where he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy . The trip of the President of the United States was not announced in advance. With Biden, Ukraine notably received visits from his national security adviser Jake Sullivan, deputy chief of staff Jan O’Malley Dylan and personal assistant Annie Tomasini.
During the visit of the American leader to the Ukrainian capital, the White House published Biden’s statement that he was there to reaffirm his support for Ukraine and announce a new military aid package.
In turn, Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the negotiations with Biden “fruitful” and “meaningful”, adding that they “bring Ukraine closer to victory”. According to him, the results of the visit of the American leader “will have an impact on the situation on the battlefield during the liberation of our territories”. He added that he had discussed with Biden long-range weapons and additional weapons, which had not previously been supplied to Kiev.
