A senior State Department official said the new anti-Russia sanctions package would include Chinese companies that the Biden administration says are violating export bans in Moscow.
Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland said the administration has identified Chinese organizations in China and Europe that are actively circumventing existing sanctions against Russia aimed at reducing Moscow’s ability to finance and fuel the war in Ukraine.
“It will be in the sanctions package that we will announce on the first anniversary of the war. We will also impose further restrictions on China-based entities or Chinese subsidiaries in Europe that we believe are actively circumventing sanctions,” Nuland said at an event hosted by The Washington Post.
According to Nuland, the sanctions package will include entities that the United States and its G7 allies believe are circumventing existing sanctions against Russia.
“They are importing a thousand percent more laptops, iPhones, dishwashers from third countries, not because they need to work on laptops from home, but so they can disassemble this equipment and get modern chips, which we denied them, for the production of new missiles,” Nuland said.
Nuland also said that Washington is discussing the possibility of supplying Ukraine with fourth or fifth generation fighter jets.
The diplomat said a decision on possible supplies would be taken after assessing Kiev’s needs.
Ukraine has previously called on Western countries to provide fighter jets. We are mainly talking about the F-16 fighters, which belong to the fourth generation. The delivery of fifth-generation fighters (F-22 Raptor and F-35), according to most experts, is unlikely.
At the moment, no country has supplied combat aircraft to Ukraine.
