Ukraine wins impressive support at UN General Assembly

NEW YORK – The United Nations General Assembly has overwhelmingly backed a resolution calling for the speedy establishment of a “comprehensive, just and lasting peace” in Ukraine in accordance with the principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter.
The document proposed by Ukraine and emphasizing the importance of the search for peace was supported by 141 countries, 7 voted against, 32 abstained.
He also reiterates the assembly’s request to Russia to “immediately, completely and unconditionally withdraw all its armed forces from Ukrainian territory within internationally recognized borders” and a call for a cessation of hostilities.
“Today’s vote is further proof that not only does the West support Ukraine, but that this support is much broader and will only consolidate and grow stronger,” the Ukrainian minister said. of Foreign Affairs Dmytro Kuleba to journalists after the vote.
A special emergency session of the UN General Assembly, which opened Wednesday and continued Thursday, ended in a vote, was convened on the anniversary of the Russian invasion.
The debate brought together 75 countries, including Russia.
White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said that by overwhelmingly supporting the UN General Assembly resolution, the countries of the world “have come out strongly in favor of law and order. rules-based international community and demanded with one voice the complete, immediate and unconditional withdrawal of Russia from all territory of Ukraine”.
“A year after the start of the conflict, the international community remains firmly committed to our common values, including the principles of sovereignty, independence and territorial value that underpin the Charter of the United Nations, as well as the responsibility for the violations of international law, including Russia’s war of aggression,” Sullivan added.
EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said Russia had been trying all week to thwart UN efforts.
“Again, she failed. We see that clearly in the results of the vote,” he told reporters in the presence of many EU foreign ministers who traveled to New York for the meeting. “There are only a small handful of voices from Russia’s side confirming that in the eyes of the world the aggression against Ukraine must end – it must end now and open the door to a world fair, sustainable and global.”
Russia was mainly supported by the countries that had been on its side since the beginning of the war: Belarus, Eritrea, Mali, Nicaragua, North Korea and Syria.
