Elizabeth Holmes gives birth to her second child – pleads free from prison

– Published on:

Elizabeth Holmes, the founder and owner of Theranos, has just given birth to her second child and has asked a judge to spare her jail time while her case is on appeal.
Holmes was sentenced to 11 years in prison for fraud after falsely claiming technology designed by her company could perform a person’s medical test with a single drop of blood. Hundreds of such tests have been performed across the company.
Holmes’ lawyers say there is no risk of her fleeing the country if she is released while the sentence is appealed, but she is expected to start serving her sentence on April 27.
The story of Holmes and Theranos was told in the HBO and Hulu miniseries, The Dropout, in which Amanda Seyfried played Holmes.
“Ms Holmes has a deep connection to the community. She is a mother of two very young children, she is close to family and friends, many of whom have written letters filed with the lawsuits saying what a good citizen she is. , and she volunteers with an organization that provides counseling to rape victims, Holmes’ attorneys said in the petition.
The first born before the trial
However, according to CBS News, it’s unclear when Holmes had the baby. She and her baby father, Billy Evans, welcomed their first child, son William Holmes Evans, ahead of the start of Holmes’ trial on July 10, 2021 in Redwood City, Calif.
Holmes first rose to prominence in 2014 as the founder and CEO of Theranos, which defrauded investors with large sums of money by falsely claiming that Theranos technology could perform hundreds of medical tests with only a few drops of blood.
Holmes was charged with 11 counts of fraud, according to claims filed by investors and patients. A jury found Holmes guilty on four counts.
Holmes was found not guilty on four counts, but a jury returned no verdict on three counts.
A journalist denounces the fraud
Holmes’ fraud came to light in 2015, when Wall Street Journal reporter John Carreyrou reported that the machine Holmes was selling, called The Edisonvir, didn’t actually work and the company was using outside technology to fake results. positive tests. . Federal authorities later investigated Holmes and charged her in 2018.
Holmes’ defense went out of its way to show that Holmes was naive and had no intention of defrauding investors. Holmes testified that her judgment was impaired at the time by the alleged sexual and emotional abuse she allegedly suffered in her relationship with former Theranos executive Ramesh Sunny Balwani, her ex-boyfriend and co-defendant. .
Balwani was found guilty of 12 counts of fraud in July last year. Prosecutors said he would be sentenced after Holmes was convicted.
Prosecutors, however, argued that Holmes knew exactly what she was doing.
