Þórhildur Þorkelsdóttir, BHM’s advertising representative, and Nadine Guðrún Yaghi, Play’s communications director, are celebrating as one year has passed since they launched the Aftermath podcast.
Both were media reporters, Þórhildur at RÚV and Nadine at Stöð 2, Vísi and Bylgjuni, before starting their current jobs. A year ago, they announced they would debut with Aftermath, a podcast with new twists on the big, hot issues that captured the nation’s attention at the time.
In Aftermath, they’ll review news that for some reason gets stuck there, both old and new. The episodes reveal key information that was missing from coverage at the time and shed new light on the issues.
“These days, it’s been a year since we aired the first episode of Aftermath. Last week, viewing figures were compiled for us and we are in the clouds, to say the least,” says Þórhildur on LinkedIn.
“Each episode of Aftermaal averages 35,000 plays. There are almost 300,000(!) plays of the episodes as a whole. Needless to say, those numbers far exceed our wildest hopes.”
She says they were very surprised by the diversity of the group of listeners. “In my opinion, this shows us how great the potential of podcasting is and that the medium reaches a much wider group than traditional media. At the beginning, we decided to be more personal than general in the coverage of the news and to discuss the subject sincerely and without filter. The podcast is a great medium for that”, says Þórhildur
“I think the numbers also show black and white that people are generally interested in news and current affairs, because in most reporting there are hidden human stories that create the discussion and with which most people connect.”
