WASHINGTON – Former US President Donald Trump, who was accused of paying an adult film actress money as payment for her silence, faces several other serious criminal investigations related to his 2020 election defeat and to the classified documents he took with him after the end of the presidential mandate.
Investigations may lead to new charges or, conversely, clear the former president of suspicion of wrongdoing. However, in light of these proceedings, Trump’s political future seems uncertain.
Special Counsel Jack Smith, appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland, leads two of the biggest investigations with a large team of prosecutors.
One has to do with Trump’s role in trying to reverse the results of the 2020 presidential election and his subsequent calls for supporters to come to the US Capitol and “fight like hell” to prevent Congress to certify the results of the Electoral College vote declaring a Democrat the winner Joe Biden.
That day, about 2,000 Trump supporters stormed the Capitol, destroyed offices and clashed with police.
Another investigation by Smith involved hundreds of classified documents that Trump took with him to his residence in Mar-a-Lago, Florida when he left office, rather than turning them over to the National Archives as required by the law.
Trump voluntarily returned some of the documents after they were requested by authorities.
However, when the Justice Department suspected some of the papers were still at Mar-a-Lago, it obtained a search warrant last August, during which FBI agents found classified documents.
Trump said that as a former president he had the right to keep these documents.
Additionally, Atlanta State’s Attorney Fanny Willis is investigating Trump’s role in trying to overturn Georgia election results that saw Biden 11,779 votes ahead of him.
Smith and Willis sent subpoenas to a number of former Trump administration officials to testify before grand juries about their post-election conversations with Trump, his efforts to nullify the election and stay in power.
As part of a civil investigation into Trump’s real estate empire, New York State Attorney General Letitia James has accused Trump of misrepresenting the value of his property to lenders and insurers.
She demands that Trump, his sons Donald Jr. and Eric and his daughter Ivanka be banned from doing business in New York.
