The club said in an official statement today:” Given the seriousness of the information that has appeared today in a newspaper in which La Liga President Javier Tebas has been linked to providing false evidence to the Public Prosecutor in order to incriminate our club, FC Barcelona would like to express its dismay, its deep indignation and its outrage.”.

He continued:” For this reason, we ask the president of La Liga to appear urgently and publicly to explain his point of view”. The statement confirmed: “FC Barcelona feels, as President Joan Laporta has repeated in recent weeks, that it is the victim of a media campaign for events that did not happen, as Barcelona never paid the referees.”. The statement concluded:” For reasons of dignity and respect for the presidency of La Liga, Mr. Tebas must resign from his position”.

The European Football Association (UEFA) had recently announced that it had opened an official investigation into the matter “A possible violation of the legal framework of the body supervising European football” Through payments made by FC Barcelona to a company owned by a senior refereeing official.

Prior to that, a Barcelona court agreed to hear the case after prosecutors filed a complaint over what they alleged were payments of 7.3 million euros ($7.95 million) made to companies owned by Jose Maria Enriquez Negrera from 2001 to 2018. Negrera was vice-chairman of the referees’ committee. In the Spanish Football Federation from 1993 to 2018 under then-president Victoriano Sánchez Armeno. And FC Barcelona had denied, in a statement last month, any wrongdoing, saying that it had simply paid an external consultant who provided him with technical reports on professional arbitration, describing it as a common practice among professional football clubs .. stressing that it would cooperate fully with the investigation, And that he did not buy the responsibility of any referee and did not try to influence the decisions of any referee.
