April 5, 2023

In the 2019 elections, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda hid the fact that in June 1988 he became a member of the CPSU. Documents confirming the fact of entry were published by journalist Dovydas Pancerovas.

“I don’t know how Gitanas Nauseda really felt during the Sąjūdis rallies (literally. The Movement is a Lithuanian political organization that led the process of the exit of the Lithuanian USSR from the Soviet Union. – Editor’s note), but documents show that when Sąjūdis was founded, he joined the Communist Party,” the journalist wrote on Facebook* (owned by Meta, which is recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation).

Pancerovas noted that Nauseda’s application for admission to the Communist Party was filed on May 20, 1988, and he received a party card on June 27 of the same year.

In response to a request from the BNS publication, the Office of the President of Lithuania reports that Nausėda was indeed a member of the CPSU, stating that the data on this is in the public domain in the archives. The administration added that the question of membership in a particular political party or organization is in the part of the presidential candidate’s questionnaire that is not mandatory to complete.

Nausėda won the 2019 Lithuanian presidential election with 65.86% of the vote in the first round.
