Donald Trump to fight $500 million case against former lawyer in New York

New York: Former US President Donald Trump is on his way to New York for a civil trial after filing a $500 million lawsuit against his former lawyer Michael Cohen. In the case filed in a federal court in Florida on Wednesday, Trump alleges that Cohen breached his contract with him as his attorney by disclosing confidential information and spreading falsehoods. Cohen served as Trump’s fixer, paying porn film actress Stormy Daniels $130,000 to keep quiet after she claimed to have had an affair with the former president.

One of the 34 charges filed last week against Trump by Manhattan prosecutor Alvin Bragg is that the money payments to the actress were illegally disguised as an attorney’s fees. Cohen was indicted on tax and election finance charges in connection with the payoff. On Thursday, New York Attorney General Letitia James is scheduled to participate in a legal process regarding a $250 million civil lawsuit filed against the former president, his three children involved in his business, and the Trump Organization.

Last August, he refused to answer nearly 400 questions. It claimed that he has been given constitutional protection against making statements. He will not face jail term in the civil case. On Tuesday, Trump told Fox News that he would still run for president in next year’s election even if convicted. Asked if he would recuse if convicted, Trump said, “I would not.” The US Constitution does not bar a convicted person from contesting for the presidency.
